What Causes Varicose Veins?

According to the Society of Interventional Radiology, venous insufficiency (vein disease) is an abnormal circulatory condition affecting 50 to 55% of women and 40 to 45% of men suffering from this condition. But for Americans 50 and older, one out of every two people is affected.

The most common underlying cause of venous insufficiency is venous reflux within the greater saphenous vein, leading to pooling of blood in the visible veins below it.

Other risk factors and causes include:

  • A family history of varicose veins
  • Age
  • Being female (higher incidence)
  • Pregnancy
  • A sedentary lifestyle
  • Obesity
  • Conditions such as cardiac disease, diabetes or phlebitis
